सौर्यमण्डल भनेकोसूर्य र यसको परिक्रमा गर्ने सबै वस्तुहरू मिलेर बनेको गुरुत्वाकर्षण प्रणाली। यो लगभग ४.६ अर्ब वर्ष पहिले ग्यास र धुलोको भत्किएको बादलबाट बनेको थियो। यस प्रणालीमा आठ ग्रह, असंख्य चन्द्रमा, क्षुद्रग्रह, धूमकेतु र अन्य हिउँ पिण्डहरू समावेश छन्। हाम्रो सौर्यमण्डलमा सूर्य, आठ ग्रह(Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), आधिकारिक रूपमा नाम दिइएका पाँच शिशु ग्रह(dwarf planets : Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris.), सयौं चन्द्रमा र हजारौं क्षुद्रग्रह र धूमकेतुहरू समावेश छन्।

What is a planet?

The word goes back to the ancient Greek word planet, and it means "wanderer."

A more modern definition can be found in the Merriam-Webster dictionary which defines a planet as "any of the large bodies that revolve around the Sun in the solar system."

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) - a group of astronomers that names objects in our solar system - agreed on their own definition of the word "planet." This new definition changed caused Pluto's famous "demotion" to a dwarf planet.

The definition of a planet adopted by the IAU says a planet must do three things:

A. It must orbit a star (in our cosmic neighbourhood, the Sun).

B. It must be big enough to have enough gravity to force it into a spherical shape.

C. It must be big enough that its gravity has cleared away any other objects of a similar size near its orbit around the Sun.
